L’article conclut avec une exposition brève de la notion du narcissisme bénin de Fromm, de son contenu spécifique aux conditions de sa possibilité. À cet égard, d’attention est donnée à la fois à la populace et aux élites gouvernantes. Le point d’attention puis se déplace à l’approche du Fromm sur le concept Freudien du narcissisme, avant de procéder à explorer en quelque détail son explication des mécanismes symboliques et du climat contextuel qui doivent combiner en réalité afin que les énergies narcissiques soient acheminées au autoritarisme et à la violence. L’analyse est d’abord située dans le débat méthodologique sur les opérations analytiques requises pour une compréhension adéquate de la violence autoritaire, en expliquant pourquoi une perspective psychanalytique est nécessaire. Cet article offre une évaluation bien disposée de la conceptualisation du narcissisme selon Erich Fromm et du rapport de cette notion à l’émergence, la nourriture et la résolution de la violence autoritaire. The article concludes with a short exposition of Fromm’s notion of benign narcissism, from its specific content to the conditions of its possibility. Attention in this regard is paid both to the populace and governing elites. The focus then shifts to Fromm’s take on the Freudian concept of narcissism, before proceeding to explore in some depth his account of the symbolic mechanisms and contextual climate that must combine in practice in order for narcissistic energies to be channeled into authoritarianism and violence. The discussion is first placed within the methodological debate over the analytic operations that are required for an adequate understanding of authoritarian violence, explaining why a psychoanalytic perspective is necessary. This article offers a sympathetic appraisal of Erich Fromm’s conceptualisation of narcissism as it relates to the emergence, sustenance, and resolution of authoritarian violence. Indeed, Fromm’s analytic operations and foci combine to offer a firm rebuttal to Bourdieu’s curiously ahistorical contention that psychoanalysis concerns itself exclusively with the individual and always in line with some version of psychologistic determinism, thereby serving as an apologia for the abuses subjects suffer under the established order. Substantively, moreover, Bourdieu tends to exclude physically violent forms of domination from his account of the material effects of symbolic constructs, whilst Fromm consistently places them centre stage. As far as method is concerned, whereas Bourdieu focuses attention on the socio-political processes of production and reproduction of the perceptive structures that individuals and groups employ in their judgements and actions, Fromm fruitfully extends wider to include the links between perceptive and socio-political structures, on the one hand, and the innate structures of the human psyche, on the other hand. To this end, Frommian psychoanalysis is compared with the ‘socio-analysis’ of Pierre Bourdieu. This article aims to make a case and set the foundations for retrieving Erich Fromm’s Freudo-Marxist theory of action and his approach to social domination in particular.
